"The New Year"- A Short Narrative

As I enjoy writing I have decided to write a short story to kick off the new year. I posted later than midnight because I didn't want it to get lost in a flood of posts. Enjoy.

“24 hours until the new year.” Steve told himself. “When I sit back and think about this one though, all I can conjure up is feelings of regret and missed opportunities.” Steve tossed and turned for a few moments in his bed. “They always go out with a bang. I want to be the same way. Screw doing nothing anymore!” Steve got out of bed and went towards his phone. He was going to reignite an old flame. “I was happy flirting with her. I was happy thinking about her. She always seemed happy. Maybe, just maybe, I can pull something off.”

Scrolling through the contact list he stopped on her name. A small sigh could be heard. He clicked the message button and began typing.

"Hey. It sure has been a while. I hope all is well. I’m tired of this silly nonsense that goes on between us. I’ve known you for years. I’ve liked you for just as long. You know I have. I tried once, but it was a half-assed rushed attempt at starting something. I’ve changed. I’ve grown up. The shit I pulled, the crap I talked, that life I used to live has been replaced. I have outgrown it. I want you to know what you mean to me. The first one I liked. The first one that me feel giddy. The first one I wanted to be more than friends with. You are something special to me. I can’t even explain it. When I was away, and you texted me. That silly message; hiding your identity. To you, it may have been a fun way to restart. To me, it meant the world. These feelings are hard to express. They build up inside. I’ve wanted to be yours. I may not be perfect, but who is? What does it take to get someone incredible like you? A person who has it all. The brains. The personality. The actions. It is a priceless combination. I’m sure you have never thought of me as much. But I want that to change. This year has been nothing to me yet. I want that to change. I have 24 hours. What do you say?”

His finger hovered over the send button. He closed his eyes, made a wish, and tapped it. The message was sent. All his feelings just poured out. He fell to his knees. “What have I done? What was I thinking? God dammit! I want to take it back. I need to take it back! I… I…” before he could finish his phone dinged. All it said was “wow…” he waited, now perked up a little bit. “I… I mean this much to you?” “All that and more.” He quickly replied. “I cannot express it. I truly can’t. You are just incredible. In every way.”

His phone went silent for a few moments. It dinged. “Yes.” Was all that his phone read. “I want to be with you too.” Small tears of excitement were falling from his eyes. “Later, we celebrate the last day of the year of in style.”

It was at this moment when he woke. A dream. A ruthless, painful dream. That was all that was. Steve turned over and smashed his head into the pillow. Steve grabbed his phone and began trying to type out a similar message with as strong a message. Yet, now his mind wouldn’t cooperate. “We haven’t talked in forever.” He opened with. “I liked you for a while. I still do. You mean a lot to me. I want to end this year on a happy thought. We should spend it together.” He then quickly sent it. After a moment his phone dinged. “Aww that’s sweet but I already have plans with Ron.”

He was now distraught. Ron. Her boyfriend. The one she got because he waited too long. Instead of making that move, he dilly-dallied. Now, he was alone. His year really was a bust.

“Maybe 2014 will be different.” He sighed. “Maybe.”

Steve wears many faces. We all look a bit like one of them from time to time. Hang in there man. A little wrenching, detailing or a quick drive to nowhere in particular may not heal all wounds but it's a good distraction.
